What are Tinctures? and How to Take Them

At Seta Vida, we strive to create mushroom and plant based formulas that can be taken every day. I LOVE using tinctures in my daily wellness ritual because they’re effective, quick, and convenient, and really easy to use.

What is a tincture you may ask? Let’s start with the basics.

Tinctures are liquid extracts made from plants and fungi that you take orally (by mouth). They are usually extracted in alcohol (We use Biodynamic Cane Alcohol). Our mushroom based remedies are double-extracted, which means we use alcohol and water in two different extractions, and then combine them. This allows all of the constituents of the different mushrooms to offer their full range of benefits. In some of our other products, we extract plant compounds using apple cider vinegar and/or local honey.

For the optimum experience, we recommend taking the correct dosage of your tincture (usually measured by the ‘dropperful’, which basically means a natural squeeze) directly under the tongue and hold it there for 60-90 seconds, if you can. Sublingual ( under the tongue) medicine enters the bloodstream much more quickly and directly than by any other means.

Although some herbs will an immediate effect, like Valerian Root in our Night Time Nectar blend for example, others that are more nutritive and building in nature may take several weeks of continual use before best results are seen (much like a multi-vitamin). This is the nature of mycomedicinals.

Myco Pro Tip: If you have a hard time remembering to take your tincture, you can set yourself up for success by setting an alarm on your phone, or taking it at the same point every day in your regular routine ( I take mine with my morning tea, and again before I leave work for the day).

When you make the time to take your extract, its an opportunity to create a moment of presence. Once the tincture is under your tongue, use those 60-90 seconds to do a quick self check in. Take a deep breath in and ask yourself : “How am I feeling today?” Bring awareness to the top of the head and scan all the way down to your toes, noticing any sensation in the body and any noise in the mind.

Is there anything that you can do to create a little more space for whatever you’re feeling? You can try a stretch, an extra deep breath, a couple kind words of affirmation, or just enjoy the opportunity to slow down into the present. Allow that moment to create some self-lovin’ magic in your day, no matter how hectic it can be. Trust me, your health - and your happiness - is always worth it <3
